Black Commentator Nails It

The Black Commentator raises an issue that all Africans in America need to be asking - will the "New" New Orleans be Black?
One of the premiere Black cities in the nation faces catastrophe. There is no doubt in my mind that New Orleans will one day rise again from its below sea level foundations. The question is, will the new New Orleans remain the two-thirds Black city it was before the levees crumbled?

Some would say it is unseemly to speak of politics and race in the presence of a massive calamity that has destroyed the lives and prospects of so many people from all backgrounds. But I beg to differ. As we have witnessed, over and over again, the rich and powerful are very quick to reward themselves as soon as disaster presents the opportunity. Remember that within days of 9/11, the Bush regime executed a multi-billion dollar bailout for the airline industry. By the time you hear this commentary, they may have already used the New Orleans disaster to bail out the insurance industry – one of the richest businesses on the planet. But what of the people of New Orleans, 67 percent of whom are Black?

PLease sign my petition calling on the US Senate asking them to hold immediate hearings on why aid to NOLA was delayed

http://www.petitiononline.com/Katrina5/petition.html

To: the United States Senate
On August 29, 2005, a major hurricane struck the Southeastern United States, including the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Thousands of people perished in the immediate aftermath.

The United States Government has been slow to respond. Hundreds of people or more are dying because of dehydration and hunger. Many more will die due to illness caused by unsanitary conditions, including, but not limited to, human waste in the flood waters.

The delays represent a large breach of Homeland Security. We have shown by our ineptitude that we can no longer respond to the immediate needs of Americans in times of crisis.

We hereby call on the United States Senate to hold immediate public hearings into the delays by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) in getting help and relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We also call on full and unencumbered cooperation from the heads of these agencies, President George Walker Bush, and other members of his cabinet.

We also call for the resignation or firing of any employee found to have impeded the delivery of services to the victims, including any senior Bush Administration officials that may be involved.
